Kansas University officials revealed plans for a $5.8 million, 25-story humanities building which was expected to be the tallest structure in the state and one of the tallest buildings on any campus in America. It was to be across Jayhawk Boulevard from Frank Strong Hall with 51 classrooms and 11 undergraduate seminar rooms. In all, the plans called for 275,000 square feet of usable space, about twice the floor space in Strong Hall. Steadily pared down due to lack of funds, the building eventually emerged as the current Wescoe Hall.

Three Boy Scouts from one Lawrence family received their Eagle awards at the same time – twins Norman and Nolan Johannsen and brother Rodney. The twins were 15, Rodney was 16. It appeared to be a first such occurrence in the Lawrence community.
