Three questions with ... Jared Comfort, new Schwegler School principal
Jared Comfort, 31, is returning to the district where he first gained teaching experience.
On Tuesday, Lawrence Superintendent Randy Weseman named Comfort as new principal at Schwegler School, 2201 Ousdahl Road.
"Lawrence is a really well-respected district, especially across the state. It's a progressive school district and community," he said.
Weseman also announced that outgoing Schwegler Principal Angelique Kobler will move to district headquarters to become the district's new division director of instructional services.
Comfort is a Lawrence resident, has earned two education degrees from Kansas University and for the last two years has served as assistant principal at Williams Magnet School in Topeka.
"Jared shows a strong commitment to student improvement and is a good fit for Schwegler," Weseman said.
Comfort has taught first, third and fourth grades in Topeka for six years and has served as a lead teacher at Sylvan Learning Center in Lawrence for two years. He said one of his major duties in his first year will be to help implement all-day kindergarten at Schwegler, which he has experience with in the Topeka district.
"Mr. Comfort comes with a wealth of experience from a variety of educational areas," said Deborah Norwood, a Schwegler fourth-grade teacher.
Kobler has been principal at Schwegler for three years.
"It's definitely a community and has that family feeling of looking out for each other, taking care of each other and supporting each other," she said. "I think Jared is going to be a great addition to that."
Part of Kobler's duties will involve reviewing and evaluating results of state assessment tests.
