KU commencement schedule

Kansas University will conduct its 135th commencement Sunday, with a variety of school and honorary recognitions held during the days before.

Each of the 12 professional schools has some sort of recognition ceremony for graduates, while the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences recognizes graduate students and those undergraduates graduating with distinction and highest distinction. Tickets are required for a number of events.

On Sunday, commencement begins at 2:30 p.m. and should conclude about 4:15 p.m., university officials say.

Parking, which is free on campus, will be at a premium on Sunday. Parking lots immediately east and west of Memorial Stadium are ADA accessible and special needs lots. Buses will run from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday with a loop that serves Memorial Stadium, the Kansas Union, Jayhawk Boulevard, Murphy Hall, the south parking facility, the Burge Union, Daisy Hill and the Lied Center.

Drivers should keep in mind that a parking ban goes into effect today on Memorial Drive starting at midnight and the street will be closed to traffic between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Sunday.

Graduates are asked to assemble at 2 p.m. Sunday on Memorial Drive near the Campanile. There, grads will be directed to where they should stand before winding their way down the hill to Memorial Stadium for ceremonies.

Although Sunday’s forecast calls for a slight chance of rain, it’s still possible. If the weather gets bad, officials will postpone the commencement ceremony until 4:30 p.m. In that case, graduates would be asked to gather on Memorial Drive at 4 p.m.

Should the weather not clear up by then, the ceremony will be postponed until 6:30 p.m., with graduates lining up on Memorial Drive a half-hour beforehand.

A third attempt would be made to hold commencement at 9 a.m. Monday, if the weather doesn’t improve Sunday. Graduates will assemble on Memorial Drive at 8:30 a.m.

Graduates and guests can stay on top of weather announcements regarding commencement on either KJHK radio (FM 90.7) or 6News.

They can also call KU Info at 864-3506 for commencement information.
