Library thoughts

To the editor:

It has been a while now that the city officials were talking about building another library somewhere here in Lawrence.

I think the present public library is still a good library to keep. The present location is accessible to the people coming to town to shop and then close enough for the shoppers to stop by the library to check out good reading materials to take home. I know the parking space is one of the reasons why they’re needing another library. Summertime is a bad time to find a parking space by the library, especially when the public swimming pool is open at Seventh and Kentucky streets just west across the street from the library.

I think what Lawrence really needs is a satellite library in the 23rd and Iowa streets area and in the Sixth Street and Wakarusa Drive area. In those two areas the population is growing. It also is close to the schools around there. The satellite library can be a good solution and maybe less expensive to build.

Maybe it won’t cost $30 million as they mentioned that it may cost to build another library for Lawrence. It’s too bad though that they can’t build a floor or two on top of the present library to give more space for the convenience of the people coming to the library.
