Teacher charged with indecent liberties

A 24-year-old female teacher has been charged in Douglas County District Court for having sex with a minor.

The woman, who was suspended Monday from her job at Lawrence High School, has pleaded not guilty to the charges in Douglas County District Court.

Bruce Passman, Lawrence’s deputy superintendent, said the district had suspended the teacher, pending an investigation, in accordance with school board policy.

The woman is in her first year of teaching at LHS, Passman said.

It is the Journal-World’s policy not to name people charged with sex crimes unless there is a conviction.

LHS was not in session Monday because of spring break and school administrators could not be reached for additional comment.

“Appropriate action will be taken, pending the outcome of the investigation,” Passman said. “It’s a personnel matter, so confidentiality prohibits us from providing additional information at this time.”

The suspect was arrested Friday and booked into Douglas County Jail.

At her first court appearance Friday, the teacher pleaded not guilty to two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and two counts of criminal sodomy.

Court records show she was released from Douglas County Jail on $15,000 bond. Her preliminary hearing will be at 9:30 a.m. April 10 in District Court.

The charges filed by the district attorney’s office state that the victim was age 15 at the time of the alleged offenses, which were listed between Aug. 18 and March 12.

The district attorney’s office has declined further comment on the matter.
