¢Several students from Lawrence High School attended the inaugural Latino Leadership Summit at Kansas University on Feb. 20. They included Maria Camarena, Jose Carvajal-Regidor, Adrian Pena, Andres Ramos, Zayna Robles, Reina Salcido, Emily Torres and Andrew Torres.

KU’s Office of Multicultural Affairs sponsored the program for students in ninth through 12th grade who have a cumulative grade-point average of 2.0 or higher and exhibit leadership potential. The summit addressed the issues of social adjustment, higher education preparation and leadership development.

¢Benjamin Bell, Lawrence, attended the Big 12 Black Student Government Academic Conference on Feb. 15-18 in Lincoln, Neb. Bell is a student at Garden City Community College and a member of the college’s Black Student Union. The conference, titled The Power of One, included workshops, presentations and social events.

¢Several Lawrence students competed in the Regional History Day competition March 3 at the Wyandotte County Museum.

The Lawrence school district will send 28 students with 17 entries to the Kansas State History Day Competition set for April 28 at Washburn University in Topeka.

History Day projects require primary source research, annotated bibliographies and an interview of each competitor by a panel of judges. Students often spend more than 100 hours on their projects.

¢Oskaloosa High School announces its Students of the Month for February: Claire Willis, a senior; Myla Heston and Dustin Kitchen, both juniors; and Jimmy Harding, a sophomore. They were recognized for their positive contributions to the school and community.

¢Nicole E. Healy, Lawrence, was named to the dean’s list for grades achieved during the fall 2006 semester at the University of Minnesota’s Twin Cities campus. Students on the list achieved a grade point average of 3.66 or higher.

¢Cameron Moore, Perry, was named to the Dean’s List for grades achieved during the fall 2006 semester at Spring Arbor University in Spring Arbor, Mich. Students on the list earned a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Moore is a senior majoring in English literature.

¢Michelle Colgan, Lawrence, was selected as an Ag Ambassador for Kansas State University’s College of Agriculture. Ambassadors assist with activities on and off campus that promote the college. Colgan is a sophomore in food science and industry.

¢Southwest Junior High School won the first-place team trophy in the high school section at the Kansas Scholastic Chess Association State Championships on March 10 in Maize. In the elementary section, team trophies went to Quail Run School, second; Cordley School, third; and Wakarusa Valley School, fifth.

Individual medals in the high school section went to Thomas Clark, SWJH, seventh; Thomas Reams, SWJH, eighth; Alan Shi, SWJH, ninth; Keely Stenseng, SWJH, 18th; Peter Lesslie, SWJH, 21st; Kellen Cross, SWJH, 28th; and Roy Wedge, Central Junior High, 38th.

¢Quinton Keen, Baldwin City, is a new junior member of the American Angus Association. Junior members are eligible to register cattle in the association, participate in programs conducted by the National Junior Angus Association and take part in association-sponsored shows and other national and regional events. The American Angus Association bills itself as the largest beef registry association in the world, with more than 34,000 active adult and junior members.

¢Leo and Nancy Pollard, Lecompton, received 25-year service awards for their participation in the National Weather Service’s Cooperative Observer Network. The Pollards report Lecompton’s daily precipitation to the weather service and are available as backups for an automated gauge on the Kansas River. Nancy’s father, Roland Kraft, also served as a cooperative observer and was the Lecompton postmaster.

The Cooperative Observer Network is a nationwide weather and climate monitoring system of volunteer citizens and institutions that observe and report weather information.
