Robert Keith Wright and Valorie Sue West, Eudora, announce the birth of their son, Jordan Robert Wright, born Feb. 28, 2007, at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center in Topeka.

He joins siblings Natacha Wright, 18, Robbie Wright, 16, Dustin Wright, 11, Brandon West, 13, and Colby West, 7.

Maternal grandparents are Terry and Alice Mundy. His paternal grandmother is Mary Reed.

¢Mark and Lori Howell, Lawrence, announce the birth of their son, Riley Lucas Howell, born Feb. 24, 2007, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He joins siblings Erick Mayo, 11, Macy Howell, 8, and Molly Howell, 7.

Maternal grandparents are Mike and Linda Browning, Lawrence, and Bill and Susan Murphy, Simi Valley, Calif. Paternal grandparents are Lilah Howell, Atlanta, and Gary and Deborah Howell, Mason City, Iowa. Great-grandparents are Eugene and Betty Allman, West Virginia, and Waneta Green, Ohio.

¢Terry and Beth Crawshaw, Eudora, announce the birth of their son, Jack Dean Crawshaw, born Feb. 23, 2007, at St. Luke’s South in Overland Park. He joins a sister, Khloe, 4. Maternal grandparents are Martha Kidd and Mike Wileman. Paternal grandparents are Gene and Shirley Crawshaw. Great-grandparents are Ken and Doris Adams, and Frank and Lorene Crawshaw.

¢Robbie Millis and Amy Sachse, Eudora, announce the birth of their daughter, Hollyn Nicole Millis, born Feb. 5, 2007, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Hollyn weighed 6 pounds, 4 ounces and was 18 inches long. She joins a sister, Jenna Crouse. Maternal grandparents are Richard and Sue Sachse, Easton. Paternal grandparents are Tim and Debbie Millis, Neodesha. Maternal great-grandmother is Jean Sheppard, Buhler. Paternal great-grandparents are Gene and Virginia Millis, Neodesha.

¢Malcon Orji and Mandolin Veerkamp, Lawrence, announce the birth of their son, Uchenna Sage Orji, born March 8, 2007, at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center in Topeka.

¢The Lawrence High School Class of 1957 is planning its 50th year reunion for June 8-10. Class members who haven’t been notified about the reunion are asked to call Marty Shaw at 832-2999 or Gary Holladay at 843-3349.

¢Several students from Lawrence High School attended the inaugural Latino Leadership Summit at Kansas University on Feb. 20. They included Maria Camarena, Jose Carvajal-Regidor, Adrian Pena, Andres Ramos, Zayna Robles, Reina Salcido, Emily Torres and Andrew Torres.

KU’s Office of Multicultural Affairs sponsored the program for students in ninth through 12th grade who have a cumulative grade-point average of 2.0 or higher and exhibit leadership potential. The summit addressed the issues of social adjustment, higher education preparation and leadership development.

¢Benjamin Bell, Lawrence, attended the Big 12 Black Student Government Academic Conference on Feb. 15-18 in Lincoln, Neb. Bell is a student at Garden City Community College and a member of the college’s Black Student Union. The conference, titled The Power of One, included workshops, presentations and social events.

¢Several Lawrence students competed in the Regional History Day competition March 3 at the Wyandotte County Museum.

Free State High School students who were honored include Hannah Frydman, second place, senior individual documentary; and Hannah Lodwick, Sara Cortese and Rosemary O’Malley, second, senior group documentary.

Lawrence High School students earning awards included Ellen Hernly and Sue Schwartz, first, group documentary; Sam Huneke, first, individual documentary; Stephanie Jian, first, individual exhibit; Patrick Hannah, second, individual exhibit; Rachel Van Horn and Rachel Keller, first, group exhibit; Jade Holmes and Amanda Gage, second, group exhibit; Alex Boyer and Jon Samp, first, group performance; Maddie Neet and Colby Sostarich, second, group performance; Timmia Hearn-Feldman, first, individual performance; and Katherine Steir, second, individual performance.

Central Junior High students who won awards included Chijike Dikeogu, second, junior individual exhibits; Grace Elizabeth Clark, first, junior individual exhibits; Zoe Limesand, Aly Frydman and Liza Farr, second, junior group documentaries; Phebe Myers, Calvert Pfannenstiel and Anrai Richards Pearson, first, junior group documentaries; Tess Frydman, third, junior individual documentaries; and Zoey Hearn Feldman, first, junior individual documentary.

The Lawrence school district will send 28 students with 17 entries to the Kansas State History Day Competition set for April 28 at Washburn University in Topeka.

History Day projects require primary source research, annotated bibliographies and an interview of each competitor by a panel of judges. Students often spend more than 100 hours on their projects.

¢Oskaloosa High School announces its Students of the Month for February: Claire Willis, a senior; Myla Heston and Dustin Kitchen, both juniors; and Jimmy Harding, a sophomore. They were recognized for their positive contributions to the school and community.

¢Nicole E. Healy, Lawrence, was named to the dean’s list for grades achieved during the fall 2006 semester at the University of Minnesota’s Twin Cities campus. Students on the list achieved a grade point average of 3.66 or higher.

¢Cameron Moore, Perry, was named to the Dean’s List for grades achieved during the fall 2006 semester at Spring Arbor University in Spring Arbor, Mich. Students on the list earned a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Moore is a senior majoring in English literature.

¢Michelle Colgan, Lawrence, was selected as an Ag Ambassador for Kansas State University’s College of Agriculture. Ambassadors assist with activities on and off campus that promote the college. Colgan is a sophomore in food science and industry.

¢Southwest Junior High School won the first-place team trophy in the high school section at the Kansas Scholastic Chess Association State Championships on March 10 in Maize. In the elementary section, team trophies went to Quail Run School, second; Cordley School, third; and Wakarusa Valley School, fifth.

Individual medals in the high school section went to Thomas Clark, SWJH, seventh; Thomas Reams, SWJH, eighth; Alan Shi, SWJH, ninth; Keely Stenseng, SWJH, 18th; Peter Lesslie, SWJH, 21st; Kellen Cross, SWJH, 28th; and Roy Wedge, Central Junior High, 38th.

Individual medals in the elementary section were garnered by Lucas Suchy, Wakarusa Valley, sixth; Luke Lesslie, Quail Run, seventh; Edward Wilson, Cordley, eighth; Roscoe Bradt, Cordley, ninth; Cole Reams, Quail Run, 13th; Sam Stephens, Quail Run, 14th; Aaron Simon, Quail Run, 16th; Owen McFadden, Wakarusa Valley, 21st; Cal Young, Wakarusa Valley, 23rd; Andrei Elliott, Quail Run, 37th; McCarthy Fitch, Cordley, 40th; Jake Burdett, Cordley, 42nd; Darren Rawlings, Wakarusa Valley, 43rd; and Ian Gent, Cordley, 44th.

¢Quinton Keen, Baldwin City, is a new junior member of the American Angus Association. Junior members are eligible to register cattle in the association, participate in programs conducted by the National Junior Angus Association and take part in association-sponsored shows and other national and regional events. The American Angus Association bills itself as the largest beef registry association in the world, with more than 34,000 active adult and junior members.

¢Leo and Nancy Pollard, Lecompton, received 25-year service awards for their participation in the National Weather Service’s Cooperative Observer Network. The Pollards report Lecompton’s daily precipitation to the weather service and are available as backups for an automated gauge on the Kansas River. Nancy’s father, Roland Kraft, also served as a cooperative observer and was the Lecompton postmaster.

The Cooperative Observer Network is a nationwide weather and climate monitoring system of volunteer citizens and institutions that observe and report weather information.
