Local woman named Ms. Wheelchair Kansas

Lorraine Cannistra, of Lawrence, has been selected Ms. Wheelchair Kansas for 2007.

The selection was announced Sunday in Topeka. Cannistra beat out two other women to be selected for the title. The three candidates, who included Kelly Birdwell, of Wichita, and Angel Shaver, of Satanta, took part in a series of activities Friday and Saturday that helped judges decide who would be the winner.

Judges evaluated the participants based on their accomplishments, self-perception, communication and projection skills. The participants also took part in various discussion sessions.

Cannistra was this year’s Ms. Wheelchair Lawrence, which allowed her to compete in the statewide competition.

Ranita Wilks, of Lawrence, won the state competition last year and was named second runner-up in the national Ms. Wheelchair America competition.
