The sound of a revving engine attracted the attention of a Lawrence police officer patrolling the 700 block of New Hampshire Street on Wednesday night.

The officer found a Lawrence man slumped in a parked and locked sport utility vehicle with the engine running, according to a police report. Initial attempts to rouse the man failed.

Other officers arrived to assist and at one point the motorist woke up long enough to attempt to put the vehicle into gear. He then slumped over again.

Police managed to get the driver’s side door unlocked and opened just as the man woke up again and unlocked the passenger side door.

Police took the man to jail for driving under the influence.
