The Lew Perkins Charity Golf Classic Supporting Douglas County Special Olympics tees off Saturday morning at Alvamar Golf and Country Club, and there are still slots available.

As of Tuesday, about 60 of the available 144 spots had been filled, John Samuels, local program coordinator for the Douglas County Special Olympics, said.

The golf fundraiser will be an 18-hole, four-man scramble tournament with an entry fee of $125 per person.

All of the money raised Saturday will support Douglas County Special Olympians in their athletic endeavors.

“The program is voluntarily run,” Samuels said, “so all the money that we bring in from the fundraiser goes straight to the athletes for uniforms, transportation, hotel stays when we have overnight events, those kinds of things.”

Samuels said Perkins, the Kansas University athletic director, will be in attendance Saturday, as will some Jayhawk student-athletes and coaches, who will be helping and signing autographs.

The benefit tournament, to be played on Alvamar’s public course, will also feature on-course contests, gifts, lunch, a raffle drawing, an awards ceremony and live and silent auctions.

Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m., and the tournament will begin at 8 a.m.
