From the Lawrence Daily World for June 27, 1907: “The first half of this year has been a record-breaker for the Kansas Insurance Department. The collections for the first six months of the year are beyond all the collections for all of 1906. And ’06 was a record-breaker. As much as a half-million dollars could be collected this year. : The city council is on the record against the posting of circus banners on dead walls about town for fear they will be left unattended and will become eyesores. : Fire swept a large area just outside the exposition grounds at Jamestown, Va., this morning and six people died and damage ran over $300,000. The area is now in the centennial observance of the founding of the famed Virginia colony and officials are uncertain if they can finish the event properly. : W.A. Pine brought in a load of new potatoes today and sold them to W.H. Pendleton for $1 a bushel. The crop ran about 90 bushels to the acre and these are the first new potatoes to be put on the local market.”
