Trial set for suspect in downtown melee

A Douglas County District Court judge Monday set a trial date for a man involved in a March disturbance in downtown Lawrence.

Aubrey Gilbert, 23, Lawrence, faces felony aggravated assault charges stemming from the March 25 incident, in which he is accused of pulling a gun on two people – including KU football player Aqib Talib, 21 – inside a Dodge Ram pickup truck in the 700 block of Massachusetts Street.

Gilbert was run over in the fray but refused medical treatment. Depending on his criminal history, he could face between 11 months and 34 months in prison, said Trent Krug, Douglas County assistant district attorney.

Judge Jack Murphy set Gilbert’s trial for 9 a.m. Sept. 5.
