Three city football players will represent Kansas in tonight’s Greater Kansas City Coaches Association all-star football game against players from high schools on the Missouri side of the K.C. metropolitan area.

The game, set for a 7 p.m. kickoff, will be played at Blue Valley District Stadium, at 167th Street and Antioch, in Stilwell.

Lawrence High’s Nathan Padia, bound for Lafayette College in Easton, Pa., said he and Free State defensive lineman Kyle Weinmaster have been told they will start for the Kansas team. LHS running back Tony Williams, who missed some practice time with a shoulder injury, is expected to play as a reserve, LHS coach Dirk Wedd said.

“We run four wide a lot and we have six or seven good receivers and two good quarterbacks,” Padia said. “I think we’re going to air it out a lot.”

Missouri typically wins the game, which isn’t lost on the players from Kansas.

“I think it’s time for us to try to win this thing,” Padia said.

Padia was recruited by Lafayette as a wide receiver and he said he will report by Aug. 5.

“I’m working out a lot and trying to have fun in my last summer in Lawrence,” he said.

Padia and Weinmaster both also have been selected to play in the Shrine Game, an all-star game that pits East vs. West among players from Kansas high schools.

After that, Weinmaster will join his brother Philip at Baker University.

“He’s just an intense competitor who hates to lose,” Free State coach Bob Lisher said of Weinmaster. “He’ll do anything it takes to win. He’ll do anything you ask him to do. His brother got to play in this game, he gets to play in it, and then he gets to join his brother on the D-line at Baker, which is quite a good deal.”

Williams, a prospect at running back and safety, is set to play at Butler Community College in El Dorado this fall.
