Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for June 8, 1907: “The Kansas State Agricultural College in Manhattan is planning commencement exercises for the week of June 16. Many from our university have received invitations to take part in the various festivities and there is every indication many from here will attend. : The school board is to meet to select teachers for the coming year and to plan advertising for bids for the new manual training school that a recent $40,000 bond issue assured. : Services for L.H. Perkins, a long distinguished citizen, were held today and there was a huge crowd. He is the man who died from a fall from the roof at his home. Because so much insurance money, up to $500,000, was involved, there was talk of suicide. Insurance companies deny anything of the kind and are readily settling. Many here are upset at the suicide talk. : One of the highlights of the recent university commencement was the turnout of nearly 1,000 for the university dinner at the new Robinson gymnasium area. It was a notable inauguration for the new building that was completed only this spring.”
