Berryton woman injured in motorcycle crash

A Berryton woman was flown by helicopter ambulance to Kansas University Hospital in Kansas City, Kan., after a motorcycle crash Thursday morning near the Douglas-Shawnee county line.

Velinda Lewis, 49, was a passenger on a motorcycle driven by her husband, Wayne H. Lewis, 57, of Berryton. He was not transported to a hospital, and Velinda Lewis was not listed as a patient at the hospital late Thursday.

Douglas County Sheriff’s Lt. Kari Wempe said the motorcycle was headed west on County Route 442, which also is known as Stull Road. As the motorcycle approached curves near East 50 Road, the driver lost control, Wempe said.

Alcohol is not thought to be a contributing factor in the accident, she said. The Lewises weren’t wearing helmets, Wempe said.
