A Lawrence High School student on Wednesday was elected lieutenant governor at Sunflower Girls State.

Rachel Van Horn, who will be a senior in the fall, was elected to the second-highest office in the Girls State mock demonstration of a state government, held this week on the Kansas University campus.

Van Horn said it took a lot of campaigning, meeting new people and gaining support to win the office.

“It definitely gives you an idea of what you need to do to get support, not only when running for an office but also as a person,” she said.

Van Horn said she looks forward to the next few days, especially meeting actual state officials Friday.

“I basically know the issues, but I really want to learn how the positions actually work,” Van Horn said.

In other voting, Helen Bolton, Manhattan, was elected governor. After spending four days meeting people and answering questions, Bolton still has much work to do. She said she has to write and deliver a speech as well as hire a Cabinet.

“It’s been a really good experience in learning how to deal with people and, of course, gaining important leadership skills,” Bolton said.

Other state positions elected were Francesca Murnan, Pittsburg, secretary of state; Stacia Ward, Lenexa, attorney general; Whitney Sorell, Concordia, state treasurer; and Megan Barnett, Hutchinson, commissioner of insurance.
