The city of Lawrence was denied a $203,800 grant for a public swimming pool by the state’s Joint Council on Recreation despite the fact the city had met all criteria for the money. State officials said a survey showed there was no pressing need for local swimming facilities. Lawrence was one of only two sizable cities in Kansas without a public pool.
