McClinton, Talib, Collins nab preseason All-Big 12 honors

The Big 12 Conference on Friday released its preseason All-Big 12 teams, as voted upon by the media.

Three Kansas University players – senior defensive tackle James McClinton, junior cornerback Aqib Talib and junior offensive lineman Anthony Collins – earned spots on the list.

McClinton, who started all 12 games in 2006 as a junior, earned All-Big 12 honorable mention notoriety from the league’s coaches a year ago, and was put on the second team by the Associated Press. As a junior, he had 51 tackles, was third in the Big 12 with 14.5 stops for loss and also led the team with three forced fumbles to go with his six sacks. This year, the Garland, Texas, product will anchor a defensive line which lost its pressure off the edges to graduation.

Talib was a no-brainer for the preseason squad, after being named a first team All-Big 12 performer a year ago by the media and the coaches. Talib, a Richardson, Texas, native, was also named as a second-team All-American by Sports Illustrated. That came on the heels of a campaign in which he led the nation in passes defended and established himself as the league’s top cover corner. This year, the hype has already begun to build, having been named a Playboy All-American.

Collins, from Beaumont, Texas, started all 12 games as a sophomore, and was an honorable mention All-Big 12 performer. Collins is a holdover from an offensive line which was also picked thin by graduation, but his size and athleticism have put him on the radar as one of the league’s premier hogs up front.

KU’s three preseason All-Big 12 selections are the most among the six Big 12 North teams. Kansas State and Nebraska each ahd two. Texas led all Big 12 teams with seven players on the two rosters. Texas was picked by the media on Thursday as the favorite to win the South.

Both McClinton and Talib have already been chosen as 2007 team captains.
