Old Hometown – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Jan. 30, 1907: “Kansas at last seems to be in a fair way to get pay from the government for the destruction of the Free State Hotel here in 1859 by United States marshals. About $20,000 will be paid. It was built by the New England Emigrant Aid Society and was seen by pro-slavery advocates as a hotbed of treason and was destroyed by order of someone in the Buchanan administration.”
