Clinic seeks volunteers for benefit run

Health Care Access is in need of volunteers to help with its Lawrence 1/2 Marathon and 5K event. The event will be at 8 a.m. April 15. The half-marathon and 5K runs will benefit Health Care Access Clinic and the one-mile fun run/walk will benefit a surgery fund for Gibson Huston, grandson of Raintree School’s directors.

Health Care Access needs more than 150 volunteers to help with registration, course and water station monitoring, setup, cleanup, food item baking and distribution, and parking coordination.

¢ Headquarters Counseling Center seeks volunteer counselors for enrollment in its upcoming spring training program. Counseling experience is not required. An informational meeting will be from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at Headquarters Counseling Center, 211 E. Eighth St., in the Charlton Manley Building.

¢ Douglas County Senior Services seeks friendly visitor volunteers for homebound and frail seniors. Volunteers will provide social support, run errands, write or read letters, and make phone calls. For additional information or to apply to volunteer, contact Ashley Schemm at 842-0543.

¢ Operation WildLife seeks publicity assistants to help recruit volunteers to help save the lives of rescued animals. Publicity assistants will be assigned a nearby city and asked to post volunteer recruitment fliers once per month at a list of locations. Volunteers are asked to check the posters once per month and replace them as needed.

¢ The Lawrence Humane Society needs volunteers to take animals for visits at nursing homes in Douglas County. Shifts are Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday afternoons, two to four times each month. Contact Amy Povich at the Lawrence Humane Society, 843-6835.

¢ The Big Brothers Big Sisters program needs volunteer bowlers for the Bowl for Kids’ Sake event. Dates for bowling at Royal Crest Lanes are at 9:30 p.m. Feb. 16, 6 p.m. Feb. 17, 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Feb. 18, 9:30 p.m. Feb. 23, and 2 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Feb. 24. People interested in participating in this fundraising event by being captain of a team with four other bowlers should call the BBBS office at 843-7359.

¢ Meals on Wheels needs volunteer drivers to deliver lunch to homebound elderly residents and people with disabilities. The organization has opened several routes and needs more than 10 regular volunteers and extra substitute drivers.
