Wellsville ? Kelsey Verhaeghe score 20 points and Amanda Vander Tuig added nine as the Baldwin High girls basketball team earned a 57-50 victory Tuesday night against St. Mary’s in the opening round of the Wellsville Top Gun Tournament.

The Bulldogs (6-3) will face Kansas City Piper at 7:45 p.m. Thursday in Wellsville.

Tonganoxie – The state’s top-ranked Class 4A team received a scare for three quarters before using a big final frame to remain unbeaten.

Elizabeth Baska scored 12 points for the Chieftains (12-0), while Ali Pistora chipped in 10.

The game was a makeup of what was supposed to be the season opener, postponed the first week of December by inclement weather. The two teams will meet again for their second Kaw Valley League matchup Friday in Basehor.

Tonganoxie – The Chieftains fell behind early and never recovered, dropping a makeup game between two teams originally scheduled to face off in the season opener.

Jeff Hughes scored 10 points for Tonganoxie, but the Chieftains failed to reach double digits in three different quarters.

They will try to rectify that problem Friday when they travel to Basehor for a rematch.
