Two more candidates filed Monday for Lawrence’s school board.

Robert Rauktis and Victor B. Sisk both filed Monday, according to Keith Campbell, Douglas County’s deputy of elections.

Sisk is a father of two children who graduated from Lawrence High School – one in 1987 and one in 1988. Sisk was the LHS band director from 1984 to 1988. He’s also been a band director at several other schools in Kansas.

He was assistant executive director of the Kansas State High School Activities Association and retired from those duties in 2005. In that job, Sisk was responsible for the administration of music, debate, speech, drama and cheer activities for the association.

Sisk is president-elect of the Douglas County Association of Retired School Personnel.

“I thought I might be able to give some insight to education today by running for school board,” Sisk said. “If elected, I’d like to help students and teachers and our profession.”

Rauktis could not be reached for comment.

Their filings brings the total to three candidates who have filed for four seats up for grabs on the seven-member school board during the April 3 election.

Marlene Merrill, a former director of assessments for the school district who now works for the Kansas City, Kan., school district, also has filed.

The four board members ending their four-year terms this year are Sue Morgan, Cindy Yulich, Rich Minder and Leonard Ortiz.

Minder has said he plans to run again. Ortiz said he has not yet made up his mind but was leaning against it. Morgan and Yulich are not seeking re-election.

If more than eight candidates file by the noon Jan. 23 filing deadline, there will be a primary Feb. 27.
