City commissioners will consider several recommendations from the Traffic Safety Commission, including a proposal to install traffic-calming devices on a portion of Ninth Street, and a new mid-block traffic light to allow pedestrians to more easily cross 11th Street.

Background

The new traffic-calming devices would be along Ninth Street and Eighth Street as it runs between Lawrence Avenue and Kasold Drive. Some neighbors in the area requested the devices because of the speed that vehicles were traveling on the street. The Traffic Safety Commission made no recommendation on whether the traffic-calming devices should be traffic circles, speed humps or something else, but estimated costs at $125,000. If approved by the City Commission, the project would be added to a list of more than a half-dozen traffic-calming projects that have been approved but have not received any funding from the commission. The mid-block traffic signal would be on 11th Street between New Jersey and New York streets. The request is supported by the East Lawrence Neighborhood Association, New York School PTO, the Boys & Girls Club, and other organizations to improve the safety of children who must cross the street. The signal has an estimated cost of $30,000.
