Baldwin ? Blake Wieden led three scorers in double figures, and the third-seeded Baldwin High boys basketball team rallied after blowing its own 15-point lead to earn a 70-62 victory Monday night against sixth-seeded Tonganoxie in the opening round of Class 4A sub-state tournament play in the Tonganoxie bracket.

The Bulldogs (16-5) held a 50-35 advantage after three quarters, but watched the Chieftains climb back to take a one-point lead with just more than two minutes remaining.

However, Baldwin kept its composure on its home court to forge back ahead and stay there.

“We were able to regroup and get some scores and hit some free throws down the stretch,” said Baldwin coach Eric Toot.

“At this point, you just want to win, no matter how you do it. But we’ve been in close games all year, and I actually think the close games we’ve been in helped tonight.”

Drew Berg added 17 points, and Andrew Madl chipped in 14 for the Bulldogs, who will play second-seeded Basehor-Linwood on Thursday at Tonganoxie.

Jeff Hughes scored 19 points, and Tyler Miles added 18 for the Chieftains, who finish their season 10-11.

Jefferson West 50, Perry-Lecompton 47

Perry-Lecompton – The Tigers hit a three-point shot with nine seconds left to end the Kaws’ season at the 4A Hiawatha sub-state.

“It’s a tough way to lose a game,” Perry-Lecompton coach Jeff Dickson said.

The heartbreaking loss – West also connected on a half-court shot right before halftime – does not take away from the Kaws’ successful 12-9 season, Dickson said. That win total represents the most for the school since 1987-88, and the Kaws served as host for a first-round substate game for the first time in seven years.

“Our kids had a tremendous season,” Dickson said.

Andy Bowman led Perry-Lecompton with 16 points.

Kansas City Piper 66, De Soto 38

Kansas City, Kan. – The Wildcats’ season is over following a loss to the top-seeded Pirates in the 4A Tonganoxie sub-state.

Piper (17-3)controlled the game early, jumping out to a 22-6 first-quarter lead, and eighth-seeded DeSoto (3-17) never recovered.
