Former KU player convicted of battery

Bruce Ringwood, a former fullback for the Kansas University football team, was convicted in Douglas County court Thursday on one count of battery.

A jury took three hours to find Ringwood guilty for his role in a fight with a roommate on March 17, 2006.

Ringwood hit and kicked the roommate following an argument in a Lawrence town house. The victim was sent to Lawrence Memorial Hospital for medical treatment.

“This was someone that just simply lost control,” said Charles Branson, Douglas County District Attorney, in a statement. “There was no reason for him to take the actions that he did.”

In the weeks following the incident, Ringwood was dismissed from the football team. He enrolled at Washburn University, where he is listed on the football team’s roster.

Ringwood’s 2006 battery charge came after he was arrested in August 2005 for an altercation at a Kenny Chesney concert in Kansas City, Mo.

Sentencing for Ringwood will take place at 2 p.m. on March 27. He faces a maximum sentence of six months in jail.
