Shawnee ? The Veritas Christian girls basketball team narrowly survived a late rally by Shawnee Midland Adventist, holding on for a 57-55 overtime victory Monday.

The Eagles led by eight at the start of the fourth quarter.

“Adventist made some good shots and really did what it takes to get the game even,” Veritas coach Kevin Shelton said. “That was the first opportunity our team had to withstand that kind of late surge. Our girls really did well.”

Kristie Tiegreen led Veritas with 34 points and 22 rebounds, but fouled out just seconds into the extra period.

“We had to pull this out without Kristie,” Shelton said. “Taelyr (Shelton) and Marteka (Carlton) and Susan (Wilson) did really well in overtime keeping control of the ball and making free throws.”

Veritas left three players at home because of a flu bug that has hit the school.

The Eagles improved to 6-11 and will travel to Olathe Berean Christian today.

“It was a good win for us,” Shelton said. “We needed a win, coming off three straight losses.”
