Classical rocks

To the editor:

The city of Lawrence has always been proud of its “music scene,” and, by music, it means the hippest pop and alternative music generated by bands with names that make me want to laugh.

What most Lawrencians don’t know is that there are some incredibly spectacular professional music groups in this town that perform an even more alternative form of music that some call “classical,” for lack of a better word.

As I was channel surfing the other day, I came across a string ensemble playing some unbelievably fine music. So I stayed tuned to find out who they were. They couldn’t be local, but I was watching Channel 6. Then I recognized a violinist, then the conductor, then I realized that the group must be the Lawrence Chamber Orchestra. Wow! They rock!

Needless to say, I’ll be in the front row of the Friday concert in Topeka, and even though I’m dying to bring my big foam finger and my lighter and shout “Vivaldi’s Guitar Concerto!” I’ll leave the latter at home.
