Hours and closings announced for holiday

Government offices and public services in Lawrence will be closed Tuesday in observance of New Year’s Day.

They also will be closed in most area towns.

All city, county and state offices will be closed, as will federal offices in the general services administration and the federal courts.

Banks will be closed.

Lawrence Transit System and T Lift buses will not run.

In Lawrence, residential trash collection will be one day later than normal.

Parking will be free in downtown Lawrence on Tuesday. To report a water or sewer emergency on weekends or holidays, call the Utilities Department at (785) 843-2685.

South Park Recreation Center, 1141 Mass., will be closed Tuesday and reopen Wednesday. The following recreation centers also will close Tuesday and be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday: East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 E. 15th St.; Holcom Park Recreation Center, 2700 W. 27th St.; and the Community Building, 115 W. 11th St.

Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St., will close Monday and Tuesday. The Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Drive, will also close Tuesday.

Weather permitting, Eagle Bend Golf Course and Learning Center will be open normal winter hours today and Tuesday.

The Lawrence Public Library will be closed today and Tuesday. The Lawrence Workforce Center, 2540 Iowa, Suite R, will be closed Tuesday.

The U.S. Postal Service won’t make regular deliveries Tuesday. Express mail deliveries will be made. FedEx and UPS will also not make regular deliveries Tuesday.

Lawrence Meals on Wheels will not deliver Tuesday, and all Senior Services of Douglas County facilities and services will be open until 3 p.m. today and not operate Tuesday.

The customer service department of the Journal-World will be open for calls and walk-ins from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Tuesday.
