Commissioner resigns from planning board

Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commissioner Joe Harkins is resigning from his position on the planning board.

Harkins said Monday that he would step down from the board Jan. 1 because he feels he’s not able to devote enough time to the volunteer position.

This year, Harkins was appointed by Gov. Kathleen Sebelius to serve on the Kansas Corporation Commission. Harkins, 69, said he wasn’t anticipating having that demanding of a job when he agreed to be a planning commissioner.

“I just feel I’m stretched a little too thin,” Harkins said.

Harkins’ replacement on the advisory board will be appointed by Mayor Sue Hack.
