Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Dec. 16, 1907: “Mrs. Lucy Spencer died last night at her home on Pennsylvania, and the cause of death was listed as ‘old age.’ She was 93 and had lived in Lawrence for the past 50 years, since 1857. She was born in New York. : The Lawrence Business College basketball team will play the Lecompton team in the YMCA gymnasium tonight. The local college has a good record and is expected to win. : Chicago won out over Kansas City in the battle for the Republican National Convention next year, and observers say the Kansas City delegates defeated their own city by talking too much and too long. There reportedly was a flood of oratory that hurt more than it helped, and even though Kansas City entered the meeting in Washington as the favorite, Chicago stepped in late and won because it did not ”talk to death’ the voters. : A fellow reportedly yelled ‘fire’ in a crowded Chicago theater and an usher promptly knocked him senseless, preventing a rush that could have killed women and children. Good decision.”
