Kansas City, Kan. ? The Kickapoo-Sac and Fox tribal partnership has withdrawn its proposal for construction of a $441 million casino.

The unexpected move happened Wednesday, with tribal partnership attorney Ryan Denk telling the Unified Board of Commissioners in Wyandotte County that the tribes were no longer pursuing the casino.

Denk said that the proposed casino faced some tough competition from three other proposals for casinos in Kansas City, Kan. The proposals each have submitted developments valued at more than $600 million.

“We have real concerns about our ability to be competitive at the next level,” Denk said of the withdrawal.

The commissioners were to decide Thursday which of the three remaining proposals to recommend for the state to consider. The Unified Government could endorse more than one proposal.

The Kansas Lottery Commission and other state officials will look over the endorsed proposals and choose a developer to manage one of the casinos. The casino will operate in Wyandotte County, but be owned by the state.

Denk would not confirm reports that the Kickapoo-Sac and Fox partnership has entertained an offer for its land from one of its competitors.
