The storm system that was expected to bring freezing rain and ice Saturday into Douglas County moved north into Nebraska, leaving Lawrence with periods of rain and strong wind.

So strong, in fact, that the front door of Alvin’s Wine and Spirits at 4000 W. Sixth St. blew off at about 5:30 p.m.

“The wind popped it off the hinges, and it flew back,” said Miller Davis, an employee at the liquor store who was responsible for holding the door for about 15 minutes because it wouldn’t close correctly.

A new door was installed within 45 minutes.

“Just another typical Saturday night,” joked manager Scott Schmidtberger.

Douglas County was under a wind advisory most of Saturday. Wind gusts up to 30 mph were reported in Lawrence, according to Sarah Jones, 6News meteorologist.

The strong winds and warmer temperatures in place of freezing rain Saturday in Lawrence were attributed to two storm systems.

John Woynick, meteorologist with the Topeka National Weather Service, said a large storm system was moving across the western part of the U.S. ahead of a storm system in the central plains. He said a strong area of moisture streamed up across eastern Kansas from Oklahoma bringing tropical moisture, which generated rain and freezing rain mostly north of Kansas. He said about one-quarter of an inch of ice fell overnight in southern Nebraska. The Lawrence rainfall total from midnight Friday to late Saturday afternoon was 37-hundredths of an inch.

Though chances of precipitation are low today, there will be little relief from blustery winds.

“It is going to feel cold outside today as temperatures only warm into the lower 40s with a high of 41 degrees,” Jones said. “Winds will be strong out of the northwest at 12 to 22 mph, gusting up to 30 mph, and we will have mostly cloudy skies.”

She said the temperature will drop to 21 degrees overnight.
