Red Sox 10-11, White Sox 1-3

Chicago – David Ortiz homered twice and Kevin Youkilis added a three-run shot as Boston routed Chicago, 10-1, to take both ends of a split doubleheader. In the opener, Josh Beckett became the major leagues’ first 16-game winner, and Jason Varitek had four RBIs to lead the Red Sox to an 11-3 victory.

The Red Sox’s bats kept rolling in the nightcap and made it easy for Curt Schilling.

Schilling (8-5) allowed just three hits and a run in six innings, giving up a solo homer to Juan Uribe in the second as Boston upped its major league-best record to 78-51.

The White Sox have lost 11 of 13 and fell a season-low 16 games under .500.

Boston drove out struggling rookie John Danks (6-12) in a five-run fourth that featured Ortiz’s two-run homer, RBI doubles from Mike Lowell and Coco Crisp, an RBI single by Kevin Cash and two walks. Danks is 0-6 in his last seven starts and winless the last five weeks.

Ortiz, who tied a career-high with four hits, drove his 23rd homer to lead off the fifth against Gavin Floyd, and Youklis added a three-run homer following back-to-back walks.

Twins 7, Orioles 4

Baltimore – Justin Morneau ended a career-long home run drought, and Jason Kubel homered and drove in three runs, sparking a late rally that carried Johan Santana and Minnesota past Baltimore.

Minnesota trailed 4-0 in the seventh inning before coming back to hand Baltimore its fourth straight loss. Kubel fueled the charge with a two-run homer in the seventh and a game-tying sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Devil Rays 12, Athletics 2

St. Petersburg, Fla. – James Shields carried a shutout into the ninth inning and Tampa Bay ended Oakland’s five-game winning streak.

Shields (10-8) gave up nine hits and struck out eight, walking one and working out of jams in the third and sixth innings. The only runs he allowed came with one out in the ninth.

Angels 3, Blue Jays 0

Anaheim, Calif. – Jered Weaver pitched six scoreless innings, and Los Angeles got RBI singles from Vladimir Guerrero, Maicer Izturis and Orlando Cabrera against Roy Halladay to beat Toronto.

Weaver (9-6) scattered five hits, struck out five and walked one in his second career start against the Blue Jays. The right-hander had a 6.83 earned-run average over his previous five starts, allowing six earned runs against Detroit, Seattle and Boston during that stretch.

Mariners 4, Rangers 2

Arlington, Texas – Jose Guillen homered and drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single in the seventh.

Guillen hit his 19th home run with two outs in the first inning, then broke a 2-all tie with a hit that scored Ichiro Suzuki.

Felix Hernandez (10-6) allowed three hits and struck out seven in six innings to improve to 4-0 over his last six starts.

Seattle has won seven of eight, and 19 of 26 since a season-long seven-game losing streak. The Mariners entered Friday night’s game one game behind the Los Angeles Angels in the American League West and two games ahead of the New York Yankees for the wild-card lead.

David Murphy hit a two-run homer in the fifth for Texas, which lost its second straight after scoring 39 runs – including a record 30 in the opener – in a doubleheader sweep at Baltimore on Wednesday.

Kevin Millwood (8-11) was the hard-luck loser. He allowed four runs and 13 hits in 8 2/3 innings, just falling shy of the Rangers’ first complete game of the season.

Ichiro, who had three hits for his 61st multihit game of the season, had a one-out infield single in the seventh. He took second on a grounder to set the stage for Guillen.
