From the Lawrence Daily World for Aug. 23, 1907: “The annual Thanksgiving football game between Kansas and Missouri is due to be held on McCook Field here this fall rather than in Kansas City. Apparently the Kansas City people in charge of the field there are asking for too big a share of the gate receipts. In the past, the percentage has been only 12.5. KU officials say there is no way they will allow a 25 percent figure and say the Missouri people are trying to ‘hold us up’ because they seem to have the only good site for the game. : J. and H. Hertzler of Pittsburgh, Pa., have leased nearly 2,000 acres of land a few miles south of Lawrence and intend to commence drilling for oil and gas some time in the next 30 days. They have no stock offers and appear to be going ahead at their own expense. They say they are optimistic.”
