KU women face tough schedule

No one can accuse Bonnie Henrickson of watering down the Kansas University women’s basketball schedule.

Ten teams that participated in last year’s NCAA Tournament and four more that earned berths in the Women’s NIT are on the Jayhawks’ 2007-08 slate.

“Facing 14 teams that competed in the postseason will be a huge task for this basketball team,” said Henrickson, now in her fourth season at KU.

Kansas will open the regular season by playing host to WNIT participant Hartford on Nov. 11. The Jayhawks will remain in Lawrence to meet UMKC on Nov. 14, before traveling to Dallas for the SMU “Hoops for the Cure” Tournament over Thanksgiving weekend. Western Michigan and Drake will also participate in that two-day tourney.

KU will have only three other nonconference games on the road – Dec. 19 at San Jose State, Dec. 21 at California and Jan. 4 at Xavier.

During a three-week stretch in late November and early December, the Jayhawks will play five straight home games against Creighton (Nov. 27), Saint Louis (Dec. 2), Marquette (Dec. 6), Indiana (Dec. 9) and UC Riverside (Dec. 16).

Marquette and UC Riverside were both NCAA Tournament teams last season, while Indiana took part in the WNIT. After breaking for the holidays, the Jayhawks will entertain Boston University on Dec. 30, before traveling to Xavier on Jan. 4, for their final nonconference game.

The Big 12 Conference portion of the schedule will begin on Jan. 9 at home against Oklahoma State. League games starting times will be announced after the television schedule is finalized.

“Competing in the Big 12 is as tough as it gets,” Henrickson said.

With a roster composed mostly of freshmen and sophomores last winter, the Jayhawks finished a disappointing 11-20 last season, tying for last place in the Big 12 with a 4-12 record.
