Several area students participated in the Youth Civic Leadership Institute sponsored by the Dole Institute of Politics at Kansas University. The program focuses on civic engagement and practicing civic skills. The students work in groups to discuss a range of issues that affect them in their schools and communities, then present solutions.

Jake and Lisa Lahm, Lawrence, announce the birth of their son, Ethan Jacob Lahm, born July 31, 2007, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Kansas University’s department of sociology presented awards to its outstanding students recently. Lawrence students who were honored include:

Ophra Leyser-Whalen, Midwest Sociological Society’s Scholarship Development Award. She was honored for her research, “Why Use Fertility Treatments?” Leyser-Whalen also received the Christopher Gunn Graduate Student Scholarship.

Lucas Thompson, E. Jackson Baur Award for Research and Study of Social Conflict and Its Resolution; Carrie Wallace and Bree Beasley, new inductees into the Alpha Kappa Delta international sociology honor society; Tori Barnes-Brus, Carroll D. Clark Award for Professional Service and the Carroll D. Clark Post-MA Award; and Kuo-Ray Mao, Carroll D. Clark Pre-MA Award.

The department of art at Kansas University honored several Lawrence students during its annual spring exhibition and competition. The department presented about $225,000 in scholarships and awards to all winners.

The students include Andrew Burkitt, Clyde Bonebrake Lockwood and Ward Lockwood Art Scholarship; James Eddings, Hollander Family Foundation Award; Jill Ensley, Strait Fine Arts Scholarship; Rachael Huffman, Daniel MacMorris Scholarship; April Matthews, Harley S. Nelson Family Scholarship in the Arts and Hollander Family Foundation Award; Stephanie Sailer, John Merle Patterson Memorial Scholarship and Norma B. Merlin Howick, Lawrence, graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Ithaca College in Ithaca, N.Y. The degree was awarded in May.

Faith LaVon Baxter, Overbrook, is a new junior member of the American Angus Association. Junior members are eligible to register cattle in the association, participate in programs and take part in association-sponsored shows and other national and regional events.

Hope J. Sorofman, Lawrence, earned a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice with a focus on law enforcement at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau. Commencement exercises were May 12.

Jacob Esau, Lawrence, was named to the dean’s list for grades achieved during the spring quarter at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind. Esau, a junior in computer engineering, earned at least a 3.3 grade-point average.

Ryan Rowland, Lawrence, was named to the Dean’s List for grades achieved during the spring 2007 semester at Charleston Southern University in Charleston, S.C. Rowland earned at least a 3.5 grade-point average.

Brooke Longstreth, Law-rence, received a $1,000 scholarship from the Promotional Products Education Foundation. The scholarship is available to promotional products industry employees or their dependents entering a four-year accredited college. Longstreth is the daughter of Kristin and Lee Eldridge, Lawrence. Lee Eldridge is the chief executive officer of Lawrence-based Absorbent, Ink., and Kristin Eldridge is the company’s vice president.

Nicole Renee Shockley, Lawrence, received a Bachelor of Science in elementary education with a specialization in social science from Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph.

Sarah K. Hickert, Lawrence, graduated cum laude from Trinity University in San Antonio on May 12. She received a Bachelor of Arts in ancient Mediterranean studies.

Baoqing Zhou, Lawrence, won the 2006-07 Siemens Award for Advanced Placement and was honored at an event Tuesday attended by Gov. Kathleen Sebelius in Topeka.

Zhou won a $2,000 college scholarship as the female student having the best performances in the state on the most number of Advanced Placement math and science exams.

Andrew L. Huff and Kelly A. Huff, both of Lawrence, received their Master of Music from Missouri State University in Springfield. The commencement ceremony was Aug. 3.

Kelly Weege and Michelle Evilsizor, Baldwin City, announce the birth of their son, Weston Wayne Weege, born July 30, 2007, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Weston’s maternal grandparents are Mark and LaNeece Evilsizor, Baldwin City. Paternal grandparents are Wayne and Diane Weege, Baldwin City. Weston’s paternal great-grandmother is Joyce Carlson, Buffalo, Minn. His maternal great-grandparents are Deneese Jardon, Baldwin City; Carol Warner, Gardner; and Larry and Cheryl Evilsizor, Lecompton.

Jane Robinson and Elaine Rolfs, both registered nurses from Lawrence, have been elected to Sigma Theta Tau International, an honor society for nurses. Master’s and doctoral students must have at least a 3.5 grade-point average to be considered.

Robinson and Rolfs received their Master of Science in nursing from the Kansas University School of Nursing in May.

Hayley Griffith, Lawrence, received the Andrea Azar Award for Outstanding Freshmen Children’s Wear at Stephens College in Columbia, Mo. Griffith is a junior in fashion marketing and management.

Eleanor Lloyd, Lawrence, received the Eleanor Anne Coshow Smith Memorial Scholarship from the Delta Gamma Foundation. The award provides $1,000 for the 2007-2008 year. Lloyd, a graduate of Lawrence High School, is a member of the Beta Kappa chapter of Delta Gamma at Kansas University. She is studying accounting.

Several area residents are candidates for graduation from Friends University in Wichita. They include Corinna Lynn Johnson, Master of Science in management, and Karen S. Ledbetter, Bachelor of Business Administration in human resources management, both of Lawrence; Seth Morgan Campbell, Master of Business Administration, Tonganoxie; Ronny J. Nicklin, Bachelor of Business Administration in business management, Basehor; and Diana R. Manger, Associate of General Studies, Baldwin City.

Luke Wempe, Lawrence, received a $1,000 scholarship from the Kansas Sheriffs Association. The scholarship program provides financial aid to qualified college students.

Gabriel Rockhill, Lecompton, received a Doctor of Philosophy from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Emory University in Atlanta. The university conducted its commencement May 14.

Susan Grace, Lawrence, received special recognition for her artwork in the ninth annual Landscape International Juried Online Art Exhibition, conducted by www.upstreampeoplegallery.com. The exhibition received more than 300 entries from around the world, and 62 artists were selected by juror Larry Bradshaw, professor of art at the University of Nebraska in Omaha.

Kelsey Consolver, 12, was chosen as fourth runner-up in the Miss Kansas American Coed Pageant, conducted in Overland Park. The pageant judges contestants on interview skills, personal introduction, and poise and appearance in an evening gown.

Kelsey also won the best interview outfit award and placed in the top five in the optional sportswear modeling competition. She is the daughter of Dan and Ronda Consolver, Lawrence.
