The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has identified the victim of Sunday’s drowning at Clinton Lake.

Lawrence resident James Michael Whitaker, 33, was at a family gathering with six other people Sunday in Bloomington Park, on the lake’s southwest side, near the Clinton Lake Museum, when he went under the water.

As he was trying to swim from the shore to a boat that had other family members on it, Whitaker dipped below the water’s surface. He was later pulled from the lake by bystanders and transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He died around 3:27 p.m. Monday.
