Kansas University Hospital and the Kansas City Cancer Center announced Monday that they would merge their blood and marrow transplant services into one program.

“By blending these two outstanding programs, we establish the largest blood and marrow transplant program in the area,” incoming KU Hospital President and CEO Bob Page said in a prepared statement. “We also combine extraordinary resources into an organization best positioned to grow by continuing its focus on quality patient care.”

The programs will merge on July 1.

The Kansas City Cancer Center has 11 locations throughout the Kansas City area. With the merger, two Kansas City Cancer Center physicians, Joseph McGuirk and Sunil Abhyankar, will begin treating patients at KU Hospital’s new outpatient facility at the soon-to-be-completed Westwood Campus at Shawnee Mission Parkway and Rainbow Boulevard.

Blood and marrow transplantation is the standard treatment for patients with cancers including leukemia and lymphoma.
