KU completes sweep of Raiders

? Kansas University’s softball team earned its second conference sweep of the season with a 5-3 victory over Texas Tech on Sunday.

Freshman Sara Ramirez hit two home runs, while sophomore Elle Pottorf knocked in two runs for the Jayhawks (29-18, 5-8). Tech fell to 18-23, 1-9.

Pottorf’s first-inning single scored Nicole Washburn and Stevie Crisosto. Washburn reached on a walk, while Crisosto was hit by a pitch.

Ramirez hit a second-inning homer to left to give KU a 3-0 lead.

Texas Tech’s Jennifer Corkin hit a home run in the bottom of the second. It marked the only earned run against senior pitcher Kassie Humphreys in the past week, a stretch of 18 innings.

Kansas’ third-inning score came off a wild pitch from Tech freshman Ashley Jacobs as freshman Amanda Jobe scampered home.

Ramirez homered in the fourth inning to up the lead to 5-1.

Ramirez, who has six home runs, moved into a tie for third place with Nettie Fierros for the most home runs in a season by a Jayhawk freshman. Current Kansas student assistant coach, Jessica Moppin, holds the record with 11 home runs.

Humphreys (15-10) allowed one run off four hits while striking out seven in four innings. Humphreys earned both victories over Texas Tech. Freshman Sarah Vertelka allowed two runs off four hits in two innings. Valerie George earned her third save in working an inning.

KU will meet Nebraska at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in Lincoln, Neb.
