A prison inmate long suspected in connection with the killing of a retired Lecompton jeweler has been formally charged and brought to Douglas County to stand trial.

Sheriff’s deputies booked Allen Dale Smith, 35, into the Douglas County Jail on Wednesday morning after he was transported here from Ellsworth Correctional Facility. He is charged with first-degree murder and aggravated burglary in the shooting death of Clarence David Boose, 77, who was found dead inside his home on Upper River Road in northwest Douglas County in April 2005.

Another defendant, Leonard Wayne Price, already has entered a plea in the case and is awaiting sentencing. Price admitted burglarizing the home with Smith, but he says it was Smith who pulled the trigger when Boose confronted the two burglars.

“I was trying to leave,” Price said in court in February. “My cousin walked up behind him and shot him.”

Both Price and Smith already are serving prison sentences for attempted murder for a shooting during a Pottawatomie County burglary less than a week after Boose’s killing.
