Crews today are continuing to clean up debris after a spire from Plymouth Congregational Church was demolished late Wednesday.

“They’re cleaning up, getting everything ready for Easter,” said Nick Combs, an administrative assistant at the church, 925 Vt.

The noon Holy Week service scheduled for today has been canceled. However, the Maundy Thursday service scheduled for 7:30 p.m. will go on as scheduled.

The church was the scene of a dramatic rescue around 5:30 Wednesday evening. Workers from Mid-Continental Restoration Co. Inc. of Fort Scott were filling the hollow brick tower with mortar in an effort to stabilize it.

As workers poured the mortar, the tower burst outward, and bricks fell to the sidewalk below. The only thing holding up the rest of the tower was the edge of the workers’ boom truck.

The worker had to be pulled to safety by firefighters from Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical.

One lane of traffic on Vermont Street remained blocked this morning.

Combs said he expected crews to start rebuilding the tower on the 137-year-old church next week.
