Driver reports bogus police traffic stop

Lawrence Police are investigating a 40-year-old woman’s report that a man impersonating a police officer pulled her over Saturday night and told her she was driving too cautiously.

The woman said she was stopped by a vehicle with rotating lights and a spotlight about 8:40 p.m. in the 700 block of Maine Street. She said a man asked for her license and insurance information, went back to his car, returned and said he was giving her a warning for driving too cautiously.

She said she did not see a badge, hand-held radio or weapon. Police said they verified that no officers from the Lawrence Police Department, KU Police or the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office had stopped the woman.

She described the man as a white male about 6 feet tall in a white vehicle. Police ask anyone with information about the incident to call Crime Stoppers at 843-TIPS.
