From the Lawrence Daily World for Sept. 15, 1906: “The 40th annual session of the University of Kansas has been opened with the annual address, this one by Thomas Benton Murdock, editor of the ElDorado Republican. His subject: “That Which Trains and Matures the Man.” The chapel was filled to overflowing long before the talk began and there seems to be great enthusiasm for the coming academic year, when enrollment should set new records by the time it is finalized. KU says it will focus on the five branches of education: physical, moral, intellectual, aesthetic and religious. : Prof. A.M. Wilcox has issued a strong defense of the university and its religious teachings after one critic said KU has ‘neither chaplain nor chapel.’ Wilcox says he is ‘amazed at the lack of facts this critic embodies.'”
