Vintage themes flavor ‘The Replacements’

The new series “The Replacements” (8 p.m., Disney) deviates from the kids-with-superpowers theme, but just slightly. In this fast-paced adventure, two orphans, Riley and Todd, discover a strange ad in an old comic book that allows them to “order” two new parents from the Fleemco Co. in Canton, Ohio.

Their “new” folks consist of a 1970s stunt daredevil named Dick Daring and a sophisticated female British spy, Agent K. The curvaceous and sophisticated Agent K brings along her former partner, a world-weary talking car named C.A.R.T.E.R.

The kids soon discover that they can call Fleemco anytime they want to replace an adult in their lives. When the tomboyish Riley wants a new hairdo to impress a boy at an upcoming dance, she calls Fleemco and the firm arranges to enlist the boring town barber into the military and replace him with a flamboyant French hair genius. Todd calls on Fleemco to replace the town’s anti-skateboarding mayor with one more receptive to his favorite sport. But Todd soon discovers that when skateboarding becomes popular and even mandatory under the town’s “gnarly” new mayor, it loses its mystique.

“Replacements” becomes the latest in a string of cartoons to draw on the sensibilities and palate of 1960s Hanna-Barbera fare. While clearly intended for preteens born in the 1990s, it makes references to mood rings and other 1970s ephemera. It sports a power-pop theme song by the Wondermints, featured on the “Austin Powers” soundtrack. It’s not a stretch to think of the cartoon’s title as a nod to the Minneapolis-based band the Replacements, who were the most critically acclaimed and beloved non-MTV-supported rock bands of the 1980s.

¢ Singer Aimee Mann is 46. Music of a newer vintage can be heard on “Fashion Rocks” (8 p.m., CBS), the third annual concert celebrating the link between the music industry and the beauty business. Look for performances by Christina Aguilera, Beyonce, Bon Jovi and the Black Eyed Peas.
