Leavenworth ? A preliminary hearing scheduled for Wednesday was continued to next month for a man who escaped from prison with the aid of a prison volunteer.

John Manard will be in Leavenworth County District Court at 9 a.m. Oct. 4. Manard’s attorney, Michael Willcott, requested and was granted the delay by Judge Frederick Stewart.

Manard is charged with felony aggravated escape from the Lansing Correctional Facility and trafficking in contraband.

Manard escaped Feb. 12 by hiding in a dog crate with the help of Toby Young, then director of Safe Harbor Prison Dog program. Young drove Manard out of the prison with the crate in the back of a van.

Manard and Young were captured Feb. 24 near Chattanooga, Tenn. Young has since been sentenced to 21 months in prison for her part in the escape. Manard is already serving a life sentence for first-degree murder and other convictions.
