Wichita ? Kansas farmers have begun planting next year’s winter wheat crop, Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service said Tuesday.

But after another summer of drought, many farmers will be seeding in less than ideal moisture conditions. The agency said subsoil moisture is short to very short in 67 percent of the state.

In the meantime, fall harvest is now under way. About 16 percent of the corn has been harvested, along with 3 percent of the sorghum.

The latest crop conditions:

¢ Corn condition was rated 11 percent very poor, 20 percent poor, 40 percent fair, 25 percent good and 4 percent excellent.

¢ Sorghum was rated as 9 percent very poor, 25 percent poor, 40 percent fair, 23 percent good and 3 percent excellent.

¢ Soybean condition was rated 7 percent very poor, 18 percent poor, 41 percent fair, 29 percent good and 5 percent excellent.
