Assault rifle owner arrested downtown

Lawrence Police seized another weapon – this time an AK-47 assault rifle – during the weekend in a parking lot used by downtown club-goers.

Police were on patrol about 12:15 a.m. Sunday in the parking lot of Borders, 700 N.H., when they saw the weapon inside a parked vehicle. Around 3 a.m., they saw two men approach the car and made contact with them. They seized the gun and arrested a 19-year-old Grandview, Mo., man, Desmond Rashard Clark, for having a weapon near a bar.

Since the beginning of the year, police have seized several guns from cars parked in the 700 block of New Hampshire Street, an area often used by patrons of Last Call, 729 N.H., and other nightclubs. That prompted the city to change its ordinance covering weapons near bars to make it more specific.

In May, an unidentified person fired gunshots inside Last Call, but no one was injured. The police report from Sunday’s incident didn’t specify whether the men had been at Last Call, but the club closes at 3 a.m. – the time the men approached the car – which is an hour later than the closing time of other downtown bars.
