Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Sept. 4, 1906: “The refuse from the Canning Factory which is dumped east of the buildings and the water which is allowed to drain off it within the city limits at the corner of Quincy Street and Haskell Avenue is making a large and very offensive cesspool which is offensive and injurious to the citizens in that vicinity. The city engineer says the canning factory is outside the city limits and that the city has no authority in the case. But the fact is this is a mess that must be cleaned up from the standpoint of health and nuisance in the community. : Local implement dealers are being summoned to Topeka to testify in a case pending against what is regarded as an implement trust. : The Labor Day parade and activities here amounted to a gala occasion, one of the best the city has ever seen for a holiday. : Next Monday morning local public school classes will begin and the new manual training department at the high school is ready and will be in operation. Enrollment is progressing speedily and well.”
