Eudora 42, Osawatomie 0

Eudora – Eudora used a balanced rushing attack to dispose of Osawatomie, 42-0, in the high school football opener for both schools Friday.

The Cardinals received rushing touchdowns from four different players, including two from Ryan Fisher.

It took Eudora just seven minutes to get into the end zone, on a Fisher three-yard run. The Cardinals would score less than two minutes later on a Matthew Abel 37-yard touchdown run.

The Cardinals put the game away in the third quarter, getting two rushing touchdowns in the stanza, one from Travis Clark and another from Fisher.

EHS will face Central Heights on Friday.

Gardner-Edgerton 36, Baldwin 19

Gardner – The Bulldogs finally discovered their offense in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t fight back from an early deficit in their season opener.

The Blazers, under new head coach Marvin Diener, ran to a 16-0 halftime lead, then added the first two scores of the second half to increase that margin to 30-0.

“They controlled the line of scrimmage tonight,” Baldwin coach Mike Berg said. “We thought we could be the more physical team and that wasn’t the case tonight.”

Aaron Mills scored the first TD for Baldwin midway through the final frame on a five-yard run. Blake Wieden added a 15-yard touchdown pass to Drew Berg, and Chase Abel closed out the late flurry with a one-yard plunge.

The Bulldogs will entertain Paola on Friday.

Tonganoxie – Jeff Hughes ran for three touchdowns, threw for another and added a 35-yard field goal for good measure as the Chieftains avenged last year’s season-opening setback in a battle of Kaw Valley League favorites.

Hughes finished with just 30 yards on the ground on 14 carries, but took care of business near the end zone with scoring runs of nine, two and five yards. He also was 8-of-12 through the air for 133 yards and a 61-yard scoring strike to fellow senior Tyler Miles.

Junior D.J. Grey rushed 20 times for 93 yards, and senior Daniel Volk carried 13 times for 77 yards and a touchdown.

Troy 42, McLouth 21

Troy – One week into the season, McLouth has matched its loss total from all of last year.

The Bulldogs, who beat Troy 26-6 a year ago en route to a 10-1 final record, fell behind early in this meeting and never really threatened. Troy scored three touchdowns in the first quarter alone.

“Our kids never quit,” McLouth coach Harry Hester said. “That’s important to me. They kept fighting until the end. It just wasn’t a very good night.”

It was for Trevor Keling. He had 17 rushes for 192 yards and two touchdowns for McLouth.

But Troy had two 100-plus-yard rushers: Caylor Luther had 218 yards and three TDs, and Kelby Koehler ran for 110 yards and two touchdowns.

Oskaloosa – Boone Heston rushed for 221 yards and two touchdowns, and Oskaloosa held Wathena to just one TD.

Heston scored on runs of nine and three yards.

Teammate Brandon Hawks also rushed for two touchdowns – of one and five yards.

Mitch Lowe added 72 rushing yards on 18 carries for Oskie.

Carbondale – A 24-yard field goal with 20 second remaining in the fourth quarter broke a 7-7 tie.

The Chargers, who jumped out to an early lead on a short touchdown run in the first quarter, eked out the victory in their opener and will travel next Saturday to Leavenworth Immaculata.

Perry-Lecompton 20, Leavenworth Immaculata 7

Perry – It took Perry-Lecompton awhile to get things going, but the Kaws finished with a flourish.

Leavenworth Immaculata struck first when it intercepted a Caleb Denton pass and returned it 60 yards for a touchdown.

That was Immac’s only score.

Perry-Lecompton moved the ball downfield and was able to get in the end zone three times during the second half, all on the ground.

Shane Gimzo paced the Kaws with 102 yards rushing on just 10 carries.

Denton was accurate, other than the interception, finishing 11-of-19 for 102 yards.

“We just came out and seemed a little flat, and they took it to us early,” P-L coach Mike Paramore said. “We were moving the football, we just didn’t have anything consistently.”

The Kaws next will travel to Lansing.

Shawnee – Justin Woods rushed for 272 yards and two touchdowns, helping Mill Valley dominate Kansas City Ward.

Woods got nearly a third of his rushing yards on just one play, when he ran 81 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter.

Woods added a 16-yard TD run in the second quarter.

Quarterback Tray Scott threw two touchdown passes, one to Woods and another to Alex Urguhart.

Mill Valley next will travel to Basehor-Linwood.
