Kansas University cornerback Blake Bueltel did not suit up Saturday because of an undisclosed ailment. It’s expected to keep him out indefinitely.

“It set him back, and his development is not where we’d like it to be,” KU coach Mark Mangino said. “He’s got a health issue that hasn’t helped his progress at all.”

Bueltel’s action has been limited since freshman Anthony Webb took over a starting cornerback job at the beginning of the Big 12 Conference season. Aqib Talib mans the other corner position.

Back to work: The Jayhawks were back on the practice field Sunday, apparently no higher or lower after Saturday’s victory than they were after their four conference losses before it.

“We did what we always do – look at things from yesterday’s game to correct and improve on, and a just a few things on Iowa State,” Mangino said. “It was a typical Sunday – a good practice.”

QB Club meeting: The KU Quarterback Club will meet at 5:30 p.m. today at the Eldridge Hotel.

Guest speakers will include former Jayhawk standouts Phil Basler and Scott McMichael. The meeting is free for Quarterback Club members and $5 for non-members.

“There is nothing fun about coming to Kansas to play football against the Hawks or the Jayhawks or whatever their name is,” defensive end Walter Boye-Doe told the Boulder Daily Camera. “It’s a quiet stadium. There is no energy, no emotion. Like, half the seats are empty.

“I came to the sidelines and told them, “They’re going to bore you to sleep and then try to beat you. Don’t let it happen.’ That’s exactly what they did. We gave this game away.”

The crowd Saturday was estimated at 39,319.

Though the Jayhawks are 1-17 in Big 12 Conference road games since 2002, KU opened in Vegas as a one-point favorite over Iowa State, a team mired in a five-game losing streak.

Iowa State (3-6 overall, 0-5 Big 12 Conference play) has a porous defense and not enough offense to keep up. It’s three victories were less-than-impressive triumphs at home over Toledo, UNLV and Division I-AA Northern Iowa.
