QBs get slammed around

Roethlisberger knocked out, Hasselbeck hurts knee

Ben Roethlisberger was knocked unconscious, Matt Hasselbeck sprained a knee, Andrew Walter tweaked a hamstring, and Charlie Frye was advised to only answer two postgame questions because of a concussion.

It wasn’t an easy day to be an NFL quarterback.

Roethlisberger took a blow to the head in the third quarter of Pittsburgh’s game against Atlanta on Sunday, and ended up watching the final moments of the Falcons’ 41-38 overtime victory from the sideline in street clothes.

“Ben is sore,” Steelers coach Bill Cowher said. “I don’t have any initial diagnosis on him. He got hit in the head. I don’t want to speculate at this point, but he was on the sideline at the end of the game and he was understanding everything that was going on.”

Hasselbeck, Roethlisberger’s counterpart in the Super Bowl, is scheduled to have an MRI today to determine the extent of his injury, caused when Minnesota linebacker E.J. Henderson rolled into the right leg of the Seattle quarterback.

Vikings wide receiver Troy Williamson left the game in the first quarter due to a concussion that briefly left him unconscious, but he’s expected to play next week.

Walter left Oakland’s 22-9 victory over Arizona in the third quarter with an injured hamstring, though he said he could have returned.

Frye got dinged early in the game and then was sacked three times in the fourth quarter. Following the game, Frye, who sustained a mild concussion, was advised to answer just two questions by doctors because he was groggy.

Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (7) is carted off the field after he was hurt in the third quarter against the Falcons.

All of those quarterbacks had a better day than Indianapolis defensive tackle Montae Reagor, who was hospitalized with a head wound after getting into a car accident before the Colts’ 36-22 victory over Washington.

Reagor’s sport-utility vehicle collided with another vehicle and flipped onto its roof while he was en route to the game, police said. Reagor was declared inactive and the team said he was at Methodist Hospital with two team doctors.

Elsewhere, Washington receiver Santana Moss left the game against Indianapolis with what coach Joe Gibbs described as a hamstring injury. Colts safety Mike Doss sprained a knee and will need an MRI exam.

Miami defensive end Jason Taylor left a 34-24 loss to Green Bay in the fourth quarter with a rib injury, but said it wasn’t serious. Defensive Keith Traylor hurt his knee. Packers receiver Greg Jennings hurt his ankle in the first half.

Patriots defensive lineman Richard Seymour did not return after hurting his left elbow late in the second quarter of a win over Buffalo.

Denver defensive tackle Gerard Warren injured his right big toe on the first series of the Broncos’ game against Cleveland and didn’t return.

Cleveland cornerback Gary Baxter sustained a possible serious injury to his left knee while breaking up a deep pass late in the second quarter.
